If you own horses or manage an equestrian yard, you'll know how quickly a paddock can become a muddy mess — particularly in wet UK winters. Constant hoof traffic, heavy rainfall, and clay soils combine to create boggy ground that's dangerous for horses and handlers alike.
Why Ground Stabilisation Matters
Muddy paddocks cause mud fever, thrush, white line disease, and increase the risk of slips. A well-stabilised surface keeps horses healthier and makes yard management far easier.
Option 1: Heavy-Duty Equestrian Ground Grids
Interlocking plastic ground stabilisation grids are the gold-standard solution for horse paddocks. Our Heavy-Duty Equestrian Ground Grids are rated to 350+ tonnes and designed specifically for field gateways, stable doorways, and arena approaches. The open-cell structure distributes hoof loads across a wide area, preventing churning, while water drains freely through the base.
Option 2: 50mm Industrial Ground Grids
For larger projects — full paddock coverage, farm tracks, or areas with heavy vehicle access — our 50mm Heavy Duty Grids offer industrial-strength stabilisation rated to 30 tonnes per axle.
Option 3: Gateway Grids for High-Traffic Spots
The area around field gates is typically the worst affected. A 10m x 2m strip of ground stabilisation grids costs under £200 and can be installed in half a day, transforming one of the muddiest spots on your yard.
Recommended Fill Material
Crushed limestone (6–10mm) is the most popular choice for equestrian grids. It drains well, compacts firmly, horses don't disturb it, and it gives a clean finish. Granite chippings work well for very high-traffic areas.
What Does It Cost?
A standard field gateway (4m x 6m, 24m²) typically costs £275–£475 all-in, including grids, membrane, sub-base and fill aggregate. That compares very favourably to concrete alternatives and delivers far better drainage and safety outcomes.
Installation
Most horse owners complete a gateway installation in 4–6 hours using a hired plate compactor, wheelbarrow, and basic hand tools. No specialist contractors needed.
Longevity
Our equestrian grids are made from recycled, UV-stabilised polypropylene with a 25+ year design life. Once installed, they require virtually no maintenance.
