If you're looking for a low-maintenance, attractive driveway solution that allows grass to grow through it, plastic grass grids are one of the best options available in the UK. They're strong enough to support vehicles, prevent rutting, and look far better than plain tarmac or gravel.

In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to install grass grids on a driveway — from ground preparation right through to finishing.

What You'll Need

  • Plastic grass grid panels (e.g. 40mm Grass Paver Grids or Premium 85x62cm Grass Grids)
  • Weed control membrane
  • Type 1 MOT sub-base aggregate (crushed stone)
  • Sharp sand
  • Plate compactor or hand tamper
  • Pegs or edging restraints
  • Topsoil and grass seed (or turf)

Step 1: Mark Out and Excavate

Mark the area of your driveway using pegs and string. Excavate the ground to a depth of approximately 150–200mm (6–8 inches) to allow room for the sub-base, sand, and grids. For regular car use, 150mm is typically sufficient. For heavier vehicles or HGVs, go deeper.

Pro tip: Ensure the ground slopes slightly (about 1:60) away from buildings to allow surface water drainage.

Step 2: Lay the Sub-Base

Spread a 100–150mm layer of Type 1 MOT crushed stone across the excavated area. Compact it thoroughly with a plate compactor, working in passes from different directions until the surface is firm and even. A solid sub-base is the most important step — skimping here leads to grids sinking over time.

Step 3: Install Weed Control Membrane

Lay a heavy-duty weed control membrane over the compacted sub-base, overlapping joins by at least 150mm and cutting it neatly to the edges. This prevents weeds from pushing up through the grids and keeps the structure clean. Our 100gsm Weed Control Fabric is ideal for this application.

Step 4: Add a Layer of Sharp Sand

Spread 20–25mm of sharp sand over the membrane and level it with a screed board or rake. This layer fills any minor undulations and gives the grass grids a firm, even bed to sit on.

Step 5: Lay the Grass Grid Panels

Start laying grass grid panels from one corner, interlocking them together as you go. Most grids have a simple peg-and-hole interlocking system — push each panel firmly into the adjacent one until it clicks. Stagger alternate rows (like brickwork) for greater stability. Use pegs or plastic edging at the perimeter to stop the grids from spreading under vehicle loads.

For standard car driveways, our 40mm Grass Paver Grids (25 Tonne rated) are the ideal choice. For high-traffic or heavy vehicle use, step up to the 500T load capacity Premium Grids.

Step 6: Fill with Topsoil and Seed

Fill the cells of the grids with a mix of topsoil and sharp sand (70:30 ratio works well for drainage). Firm it down so the fill sits just below the top of the grid cells. Then broadcast grass seed evenly across the surface, rake gently, and water thoroughly. Choose a hard-wearing, drought-tolerant grass seed blend for driveways.

Alternatively, use fine gravel fill instead of soil if you prefer a gravel-look finish — this is popular for parking areas and gives excellent drainage.

Step 7: Allow Time to Establish

Keep foot and vehicle traffic off the grids for 4–6 weeks while the grass establishes. Water regularly during dry spells. Once the grass is well-rooted, the grids are ready for full use.

How Long Does Installation Take?

For a standard double driveway (approx. 5m x 5m), allow a full day for one or two people. Ground prep is the most time-consuming element. The grid laying itself is fast — most people cover 10–15m² per hour.

How Many Grass Grid Panels Do I Need?

Calculate the area in square metres (length × width). Our grids are sold per m², so simply order the square meterage you need, plus 5–10% extra for cuts and waste at edges.
